Organic Wines from Cantina Colli Ripani

Cantina Colli Ripani based near the beautiful town of Ripatransone already make an excellent range of wines which are mainly typical of the south of the Marche region where they are based, but recently they have launched a new range of organic wines to meet the ever increasing demand for organic wines by both the public and also trade clients.
In conjunction with the launch of the new wines they have also had engaged a new designer to update their bottle labels for the organic wines and also for their promotional material and wine boxes. This new look to the bottles and other material has brought the companies organic offering right up to date, this also includes the use of renewable energy to power some of the wine making processes and lighter, environmentally friendly glass bottles
The team at Colli Ripani have recognised that the wine buying public are becoming increasingly interested in organic and biodynamic wines so they have increased the amount of organic wine they now produce and can offer three fine wines in their new organic range.
There are three wines in the current organic range being offered by the company, these include a white Marche IGT Passerina, and two red wines, a Rosso Piceno DOC and a Marche IGT Sangiovese.

The wines are all produced in the south of the Marche region near the famous small town of Ripatransone and other surrounding villages in the Ascoli Piceno province, all the pruning of the vines and harvesting is carried out by hand, and the vineyards are constantly monitored for any signs of disease or infestation in order to guarantee a truly excellent final product.
Cantina Colli Ripani is a medium sized co operative made up of many small wine producers in the local area around Ripatransone who care deeply about the land they farm and the vineyards they own so this ensures that all the good practices that are seen in organic wine production are carried out in the making of these excellent organic wines.
On a recent visit to the Cantina we tried the white Passerina IGT which is produced using only the Passerina grape variety, this was a lovely well balanced wine which would be suitable for fish dishes and also with meats such as chicken and pork.

The company has been expanding over the past few years and now sell their wines in other parts of Europe, the USA, also more recently in China and Japan. We are pleased that with our help they also now sell in the UK at a specialist wine merchant in central London and we hope to also introduce their wines into Norwich is the east of England too.
Cantina Colli Ripani have a young dynamic sales team and are a very proactive company who are always pleased to work with others to promote their wines to new customers and countries, because of this we hope to have a small selection of their organic wines at our wine and food events that we will hold together with Olivaverde and Livinginlemarche in London over the next six months.

We have been involved with promoting Italian wines in the East of England over the past five years and our special passion has been for wines from central Italy, especially the Marche region where we have a base in the beautiful Adriatic resort of Senigallia. Through our many contacts in London and the East of England we have facilitated the wines of some excellent Marche wine producers to be stocked by a well known and fast expanding specialised Italian wine merchant in London and hope to set up similar deals with other Marche wine producers in the future.
Now we are especially pleased that recently we have been able to also help one of the most innovative small wine companies in Norfolk source some outstanding organic wines from several producers from the Marche region. this company is now in the process of opening a new base in Norfolk in the market town of Wymondham near Norwich but has advanced plans to roll out a similar operation across East Anglia and eventually into the London area.
As part of the events that Vinitours will be holding over the next few months, as well as our normal wine and olive oil tastings and workshops we will also be promoting this Norfolk based company at our events in Norfolk and also London, these include events in the Forum in Norwich, Maida Hill Place in West London and wine and olive oil tastings in other towns across East Anglia and Cambridgeshire.

Norfolk is one of the fastest growing counties in the UK and the city of Norwich which is the capital of the county is one of the most vibrant and popular cities in England and also has a large and diverse student population at the world famous University of East Anglia. Having a in depth knowledge of the county of Norfolk and the city of Norwich will allow Vinitours to promote the wines of the Marche region to a younger and more affluent customer base and also allow us to roll out a series of workshops and tasting events which would be impossible in the already crowded London wine scene.
Over the past three years we have held several Italian wine and food events at the Raffles restaurant chain in Norwich and on September 7th along with the help of Slow Food Norwich we will be holding a special event at the The Library restaurant as part of the Norwich Food Festival.
Another part of our ongoing growth of our tours and promotions is that in the past few weeks we have made progress with setting up a new working relationship with a French wine expert who will be working closely with us on holding tasting events and workshops on both French and Italian wines all across the county of Norfolk, and our area of expertise will be to promote the lesser known wines of Le Marche especially organic wines from small artisan producers.

We look forward to working with all our current friends and producers in the Marche region to carry on promoting and advertising the wonderful and diverse wines of the region to a wider public in the UK and also in other countries we have contacts with including the USA , Australia, Ireland and Holland.
Vinitours will continue over the next year with organising events for small artisan wine producers from the Marche region and where possible with wines only produced by organic and biodynamic methods of production, and we are sure that we will help a new market and public to be made aware of the wide range of fabulous wines that come from this beautiful part of Italy.

Vini Casale Vitali

The Le Marche wine producer Casale Vitali has been producing wine since 1970 at their winery and vineyard near the southern Le Marche village of Montelparo. Alfredo and Guiliano Vitale now have twenty hectares of vines under cultivation, ten hectares of fruit trees and a further ten hectares of olive trees and land used to grow vegetable crops, they have also been joined by Gabriele another family member who has brought a new drive to the business and also has married the latest wine making techniques with the more traditional methods of wine production.
The azienda and winery is just outside the pretty hilltop village of Montelparo which is situated in the south of Le Marche, being close to the foothills of the Sibillini mountains and yet still under thirty minutes from the Adriatic coast to the east.
The Vitali family have been living near Montelparo for generations and now as relatively new wine producers they are very are passionate about their wines, all of which are typical of this part of the Marche region, and they take enormous care in producing wines that have a low environmental impact on the land in this beautiful part of Le Marche.

The wines produced at Casale Vitali are al from grapes grown by the family on the land near Montelparo village and the grape varieties they use include Sangiovese and Montepulciano for the red wines and Pecorino, Passerina and Trebbiano for the white wines.
The grape varieties grown at Casale Vitali only produce a relatively low yield per hectare which allows a very high quality of grape on the vine to be achieved and at harvest time the grapes are crushed using a soft pressing technique and low temperature fermantation.
The wines produced in the south of the Marche region by Casale Vitale are a red Rosso Piceno, a Marche Sangiovese and a Piceno, then a sparkling Spumante and two white wines, a Passerina and Pecorino, all these wines being typical of this area.
The azienda also produces a small quantity of extra virgin olive oil which is only sold locally and they also grow a wide variety of fruit, mainly peaches, cherries, nectarines, plums and apples.
All the wines produced at the winery of Casale Vitale can be tasted on site as there is now have a purpose built tasting room and are always happy to welcome visitors interested in their wines.

Maltese Artisan Wines

There are several large wine producers on the Islands of Malta and Gozo, including the brand leaders Marsovin and Delicata, but we are very pleased to have been introduced to small artisan wine makers by Malta Sunripe who are based in the village of Mgarr on Malta.
Wine production in Malta dates back many thousands of years, the first wine is thought to have been produced by the Phoenicians but it was not until the early 20th Century that wine was produced on a commercial scale by the Marsovin family who founded the company which today still produces much of the wine on Malta.
The wines that we at Vinitours are associated with are produced by the small farmers and growers are all made from the indigenous Maltese varieties, the Gellewza producing a fine red wine and the Girgentina a crisp white. The grapes are all hand picked in local vineyards, these are located in Bingemma, the Mgarr valley and in Tas-Santi, these areas having being used to grow vines for many centuries.
The grape varieties grown on the Islands have increased over the years since the 1970's, and the more well known Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Moscato and Trebbiano varieties are now found in many of the wines that are produced by the big wine companies.

Unforunately the Girgentina grape variety does not produce wines that are able to compete against the new varieties that are now grown on the Islands in terms of taste and flavour, so most wine makers are increasingly not using this indigenous Maltese variety so it is welcome that companies such as Sunripe are promoting wines made from Girgentina grapes.
Sunripe Malta are one of a few small Maltese companies that are now promoting artisan Maltese food products such as fine olive oils, jams and wines to the local population as well as making these wonderful products known outside of the Islands.
The wines of Malta are still relatively unknown in the UK and only one or two specialist shops and imports sell them, mainly in south east of England, they are also served at several restaurants in central London. The specialist Maltese deli and food shop Parparellu in Hammersmith, London now sells a small selection of Maltese wine and hopefully they will be importing small quantities of wines made from indigenous grape varieties in the near future.

Vini Mancinelli

The wine producer Stefano Mancinelli is a family run azienda producing typical regional wines of this part of central Marche.near the pretty town of Morro d'Alba and the Adriatic coast of eastern Italy.
The winery is located in the very centre of Morro d'Alba, fitted out with the most up to date equipment and storage facilities and it also has a museum of farm and wine making machinery on the premises.
Fabio Mancinelli started the business when he retired, he had been making wine as a hobby and for family use for many years and since his son Stefano took over the business he has expanded both the wine and olive oil production, and is now also making two types of Grappa, the Grappa di Lacrima and Grappa di Verdicchio.

The vineyards and olive groves are in the countryside around Moro d'Alba and in total there is sixty hectares under cultivation of which fifteen hectares is given over to specialist vines typical of this part of the Marche region, from which are produced several DOC wines, including Lacrima di Moro d'Alba DOC and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOC.
Stefano Mancinelli in 2003 had a DNA analysis of the grapes he used in the production of his the Lacrima di Moro d'Alba DOC wines, this confirmed that the grapes were of the pure Lacrima variety.
The Azienda  produces in total three Lacrima wines, a Marche Rosso, the Verdiccho, a Passito as well as the several Grappa and a Muscato.
Olive oil production is also a very important part of the business and the Azienda has over 1,500 olive trees producing oil of very high quality with a intense green colour, very low acidity level and a fruity aromatic flavour. The extra virgin olive oil of Stefano Mancinelli is very balanced, has a smooth creamy taste and is of very high quality and popular with clients at tastings we have held at the Azienda in Moro d'Alba.

As part of the expansion plans of Stefano Mancinelli the family has recently converted a historic building in the centre of Moro d'Alba near the foot of the town walls into five holiday apartment, Le Civette, each renovated to a very high standard.
The apartments have the benefit of air conditioning and WiFi, as well as fully fitted kitchen and the use of a mini pool and a hydro massage, and are ideally located to allow visitors to explore both the town and also this very beautiful area of the Marche region.
There are more photos and video on our Flickr channel and we at Vinitours are very pleased to be involved in promoting and arranging bespoke tours of this excellent wine producer.

We first were introduced to the Tenuta di Saragano by our good friend June who knew the owners and had arranged for us to visit the estate in 2011 for a wine and olive oil tasting, after which we have imported small quantities of their wonderful olive oil and had some of their lovely Montefalco Rosso and  Sagrantino di Montefalco red wines at tastings.
The estate is located in the Italian region of Umbria and lies south of Perugia and just to the north of the city of Todi, it is spread out over many hectares and there are several smaller farms and vineyards located throughout this large and beautiful estate
Tenuta di Saragano has been certified by the Italian ICEA Institute and their production uses totally organic methods of horticulture and viniculture. As well as producing great wines the estate also produces a superb organic olive oil and various foodstuffs including lentils, barley and broad beans.

The wines produced at Tenuta di Saragano are both red and are typical of the Montefalco area of Umbria, the Montefalco Rosso being typically made with 70% Sagrantino grapes, 15% Sangiovese and the remainder normally made up of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sagarantino di Montefalco is made from 100% Sagarantino grapes which are typically high in Tannin but the producers have managed to tone down their influence to give produce a well balanced and elegant wine which has the potential to age for up to a decade or more in some cases.
The wines are full bodied and are the perfect accompaniment to red meat dishes, such as steak, beef and lamb as well as many types of pasta dishes and game.
In the eyes of many wine experts the Sagarantino di Montefalco is one of the most distinctive wines of Umbria perhaps even more typical of the region than wines such as Chianti, Brunello and Montepulciano which are usually associated with this region of Italy.

A visit to the Tenuta di Saragano for wine and olive oil tastings is one of the many specialist tours that we can offer at Vinitours for our clients, but as well as the memorable tastings, tutored classes and workshops Vinitours can also offer places at the famous Cookery school, the Scuola di Cucina, held at the beautiful La Ghirlanda country house, which is also part of the tenuta di Saragano estate.
There is also accommodation available to our clients, some of which is in the main house and others made up of small country houses dotted throughout the estate and each is surrounded by landscaped gardens and in the most beautiful settings in the rolling Umbrian countryside.

Terra Fageto Wines from Le Marche

Terra Fageto is a small wine maker producing around 100,000 bottles of wine each year from twenty hectares of vines located in the beautiful Valdaso valley near the Adriatic resorts of Campofilone and Pedaso in the south of the Le Marche region.
This small winery is an excellent example of outstanding wine making in the Piceno area of Le Marche and it is run by Claudio di Ruscio who is the third generation of this family run estate. great care is taken over all aspects of the cultivation and production of the wines which are all typical of the southern area of the Le Marche region.
At the time of harvesting and wine production the family work closely with the well known local wine maker Pierluigi Lorenzetti to make sure that their wines are produced to the highest possible standards so making wines of extremely high quality.
The estate also produces fine extra virgin olive oil from a small number of old olive trees which are also grown on their fertile land with its distinctive soil and micro climate.

The vineyard is managed using only natural agricultural and horticultural method sof viniculture and the estate is also totally self sufficient in many aspects of their wine production, using solar power for all their energy needs.
The wines produced by Terra Fageto include four whites all typical wines from the area, a Passerina made from 100% Passerina grapes, Pecorino made from 100% Pecorino grapes, a Falerio which is a blend of  Trebbiano, Pecorino and Passerina and a Marche Bianco a blend of Chardonnay and Malvasia grapes.. There are six reds produced at the winery, five Rosso Piceno which are very much wines from the south of Le Marche, they are all blends of Montepulciano and Sangiovese.
Then there is a lovely Marche Rosso, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and finally a Passito wine, often referred to as straw wine or raison wine which is a sweet white wine made from Passerina grapes.
The wines from the south of the Le Marche region are starting to become more well known outside of the immediate area and are finding a larger market in other parts of Italy and also other parts of Europe. Some of the Marche wine makers are now exporting their wines further afield to the US, Japan and even China where there is a rapidly growing market of fine Italian red and white wines.

Cantina Colli Ripani

One of the most respected wine producers in the Le Marche region of Italy is Cantina Colli Ripani which is based in the south of the region near the town of Ripatransone and produces wines typical of the Le Marche region.
The Cantina was founded in 1969 by a large group of growers and the first wines were produced in 1977, as of the end of 2012 there were over 400 members and the vineyards now cover over 850 hectares of land on the beautiful hills near the famous Marche village of Ripatransone. Ripatransone along with Offida to the west are the main centres of wine production in the south of the Marche region and the total current production of all their wines from Colli Ripani is over 750,000 bottles annually and they also produce a limited quantity of high quality extra virgin olive oil.
The landscape in Marche is made up of gently undulating hills in the coastal belt and hills in this part of southern Marche are still relatively close to the Adriatic sea and can be up to 400 metres in height, this produces micro climates and different soil variations which allow the growth of many different types of grape varieties.

Colli Ripani produce a wide range of wines including Rosso Piceno, Passerina, Pecorino, Falerio, Verdicchio, Sangiovese, Offida Rosso, Marche Rosato and Passerina Spumante and as well as selling most of their production in Italy they also now export to countries such as Japan, USA, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Sweden.
They are also now selling small amounts to less obvious export outlets such as Brazil, China and Russia, picking up awards at trade and public tastings in Italy and also foreign markets. There has also been extensive press coverage of the Azienda and their wines and Cantina Colle Ripani will be in London in April 10th 2013 at the Rossodisera restaurant in Covent Garden for both a trade day with tastings of a selection of their wines, and also on April 11th for a wine olive oil and food event open to the public which is being co hosted with Rossodisera.

Vin Santo

Vin Santo is a type of Italian dessert wine mostly produced in Tuscany, and from white grape varieties such as Trebbiano and Malvasia, but red Sangiovese grapes can also be used to produced a rose styled wine.
The wines are often known as straw wines since they are often produced by drying the freshly harvested grapes on straw mats in a warm and well ventilated area of the winery buildings or by drying the grapes by hanging them on racks.
The name Vin Santo or "Holy wine" is thought to date from the Renaissance period when this style of sweet wine was used by priests at Mass, but there are several other stories as to how the name came about so it is doubtful if we will ever know the exact derivation of the name!

The grapes for Vin Santo are harvested in September and October and are then laid out on straw of hung in drying sheds to allow the moisture in the grapes to evaporate, thus allowing the residual sugar content to increase and the longer they dry the higher the sugar content. Fermentation is started after a few weeks of this drying process or can be left as long as four or five months depending on the style and sweetness of the resulting wine is required. The wine is then left to age for between three and five years in oak barrels though in the past chestnut barrels were more commonly used as this wood was more commonly available and producers thought that chesnut gave the wines more flavour and complexity.

The colour, sweetness and quality of Vin Santo can vary greatly depending on the type of grape and production methods used to make the wine. Vin Santo can be produced to make a wine that is bone dry like a fine Fino or at the other extreme of the taste scale, very sweet, the wine can also be fortified with grape spirit and these fortified wines are known as Vin Santo Liquoroso. The colour can also range from very pale to dark amber and there are many complex flavours that can include hints of honey, cream and nuts.
In Italy Vin Santo is normally served at the end of a meal with coffee and hard biscuits where it is known as a Digestif and is becoming more popular with consumers in other parts of the world, in the UK its consumption has increased greatly over the past few years.
Because of the timescales and complex production methods involved in the making of good Vin Santo, the wines are generally more expensive than normal table wines and top Vin Santo can be a real luxury because of its cost.

Passerina white wine of Le Marche

Le Marche is a region of Italy that makes some really lovely wines that are relatively unknown in other parts of Italy, let alone the wider world. One of the lesser known wines which is typical of Le Marche is the white passerina which is produced in the south of the region, predomiminantly in the Ascoli Piceno province.
The passerina grape variety has been grown in Le Marche from ancient times but is now also grown in small amounts in the Italian regions of Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna and Lazio.
Passerina is one of the four typical white wines of Le Marche region along with the more common verdicchio and also the falerio and pecorino white wines, there is also a lovely slightly sparkling passerina whch is only produced in very small quantities.

Passerina grapes are relatively small but produce wines with high levels of acidity and sugars which give a very clear, balanced wine, perfect for serving with fish dishes and poultry.
The wine is characteristically dry with aromas of flowers, wild herbs, almonds, also with hints of honey and peach, this is why this lovely wine is becoming increasingly popular with wine lovers both in Italy and the UK where it is starting to be imported in larger quantities.
There are now many small producers of passerina wine in Le Marche and one of our favourites is Vini Centanni from near Montefiore, this family run winery produces a large range of organic wines all of which are typical of the Le Marche region.
The falerio and passerina white wines produced by Vini Centanni have consistently proved popular in wine tastings arranged by Vinitours and Sagraitalia in London and Norwich in the UK. Visits to the Vini Centanni vineyards and winery is one of the specialised tours that Vinitours can offer clients in 2013, as well as tours, tastings and workshops at many of the best wine producers in the Marche region.

Falerio wine from Le Marche

The most well known white wine of the Le Marche region is the Verdicchio which is produced throughout the region and also in parts of Abruzzo, but another fabulous but lesser well known wine is the Falerio variety which is from the south of the region.
The Falerio wines are produced in small quantities in a designated area south of the central Ancona Province and two other varieties of white wine are also produced in this southern area, the Passerina and the Pecorino. The Falerio dei Ascolani designation is a special wine appellation of the southern area of the Le Marche region which dates from 1975 but updated by law in 2003.
The Falerio wines must by law must contain only grapes from the Pecorino, Passerina and Trebbiano varieties and the area of production must be in the coastal belt of the region bordering the Adriatic and include the towns of Ripatransone and Offida, together with the many small villages in the area such as Carassai, Montefiore, Ortezzano, Montalto and Monterubbiano.

It is believed that the name Falerio originates from the Roman village of that name and shows a link back to the Picenum region of Italy, today we believe that this is the site of the very beautiful Le Marche vilage of Falerone just inland from the city of Fermo.
The wine is light and fresh on the nose and palate and is believed to have been grown and produced to accompany the many fish dishes that are common in this area of Le Marche, but it also goes well with chicken dishes, lamb and pork.
Vinitours along with Livinginlemarche now help promote and market this superb white wine in the UK and northern Europe and one of the producers that we work with is the small Azienda  Vini Centanni  which is located near the vilage of Montefiore del Aso. We believe that this organic producer makes some of the best examples of Falerio and other southern Le Marche wines and are working closely to promote tours and tastings in 2012 and beyond.

Lacrima di Morro D'Alba wine from Le Marche

This lovely red wine from the Ancona province of the Le Marche region is hardly known outside of the region and is produced from the Lacrima grape variety. DOC regualtions allow for up to 20% of the wine to be made from Montepulciano or Verdicchio grapes but in fact most producers make 100% varietal wines.
In the wine making process dried grapes are added after the first racking which is only rarely used in the production of red wines, the other time it is normally used in wine production is in the making of Valpolicella.
The area from which the wine comes is just inland from the Adriatic resort of Senigallia in the central part of the Le Marche region.

It is thought that the Lacrima grape acquired its name because the shape of the bunches of grapes resemble tears of which lacrima is a derivation. But it could also be that this variety of grape has a skin that splits easily and so weeps juice onto the grape bunches which again look like tears, but a definitive answer will never be found!
Lacrima di Moro D'Alba is a full bodied wine with a slightly thick texture and has sof rounded tannins, the overwhelming feature when tasting the wine is the smell of flowers, particularly roses.
The wine is the perfect for meat dishes, particularly lamb and pork, maybe not so well paired with beef cuts line steaks, but it is even nice to have it with game and full flavoured poultry dishes. The ideal temperature to serve it is between 15 and 18 C.

Rosso Piceno wines of Le Marche

The Le Marche regions white and red wines are still relatively unknown in the UK,other parts of the world and also in many parts of Italy, this is a great pity as the region produces some excellent wines and the red Rosso Piceno is one such wine.
The red wines which are mainly produced in the region are the Rosso Conero, Rosso Piceno and Lacrima di Moro d'alba plus a small amount of the lovely red sparking Vernaccia di Serrapetrona which is produced in the centre of the region.
Rosso Piceno is a DOC wine and was the first DOC in the Marche region. The wines are usually produced in the south of the region, in the areas around the towns of Offida and Riptransone, but the grapes are also grown and some excellent wines produced in the central area of Marche closer to the regional capital of Ancona.
Rosso Piceno Superiore is produced in much smaller quantities and is only allowed to be produced in only 13 small areas or municipalities. The wines differ from the normal Rosso Piceno in that they are aged in wood to give them more character and more pronounced flavours and aromas.

Sangiovese and Montepulciano are the two main grape varietes which are blended to produce Rosso Piceno along with smaller quantities of  Trebbiano and Passerina, but these will only normally will only be present in a maximum quantity of  up to 15%.
Rosso Piceno and Rosso Piceno Superiore are wonderful wines for drinking on their own as they are not too  complex on the palate, but fruity and easy to drink. This is not always the case with the Rosso Conero or the Lacrima wines as they tend to be more complex and much more suited to accompany food.
But as with most wines, Rosso Piceno and Rosso Piceno Superiore are normally at their best when they accompany a meal, and very suited to red meats such as lamb and pork and also game, but also go well with chicken and some fish dishes.

Vinitours works closely with small producers of both Rosso Piceno and Rosso Piceno Superiore wines, where possible we try to make sure that most of the wines are produced organically. We then promote the wines and the also the Le Marche region in London, Oxford, Cambridge and also Norwich.
The events that we organise are often accompanied with tutored tastings of the Rosso Piceno and also the Rosso Piceno Superiore wines, where we also offer tours with accommodation in Le Marche to interested individuals and also larger groups.

The Verdicchio white wine of Le Marche

Verdicchio is the most famous and well known white wine of the Marche region, its presence first recorded in the 14th Century. The while the grape is grown throughout the region it is most widely encountered in the DOC wines of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica.

The grapes are primarily grown in the two central provinces of Le Marche, Ancona and Macerata while the area of Castelli di Jesi, located around the commune of Jesi in the Ancona province is the larger of the two areas and tends to produce a higher volume, while the wines of Verdicchio di Matelica are located in the nearby province of Macerata.

The Verdicchio grape is most probably indigenous to the Marche region but some believe that it may be genetically related to the Trebbiano grape variety, the clones of trebbiano grown in Lombarday and Soave are very similar. All the white grape varieties in Italy are probably originally genetically derived from the Greco grape type which is why most show some similarities even though barely noticeable in most cases.
The wine has a slightly green or yellow hew and can also be very slightly frizzante or sparkling and is excellent to have with pasta, fish and chicken.

Truffles in Le Marche

In Italy the towns of Alba in Piedmont and Acqualanga in Le Marche are both world famous for their truffles, both for the white and the black varieties.
Acqualanga is a beautiful small town located in the Italian Apennine mountains in the Pesaro and Urbino province of the eastern Italian region of Le Marche, and its national festival that is held each Autumn is considered to be one of the most important Truffle festivals in the world. The area of countryside around the town has a particular climate that is particularly suited to the growth of truffles and this also allows truffles to be harvested all year round.
Acqualagna as a major fine food centre is also closely associated with the Slow Food movement in Italy and is part of the international Cittaslow network. Vinitours has been working in partnership with Slow Food Norwich in the UK for several years which as part of the Slow food movement is now also closely associated with Slow Food in Italy and groups in the Le Marche region.
This part of Le Marche is one of the most beautiful areas of this beautiful and unspoilt region of Italy, with stunning mountains and large remote forests which make up the Furlo Reserve which includes 3,600 hectares of wood, grasslands and mountain peaks.
Vinitours together with our partners and associates in Italy are pleased to be able to offer from the autumn of 2011, a range of visits, tours and truffle hunts in this beautiful and fascinating area of  the Le Marche region.

From January to March the common black truffle is predominant, from April to June it is the summer black truffle, July to September the white Marzuolo truffle and then from October to January it is the most highly prized truffle of all, the white truffle, tuber Magnatum Pico.
There are three truffle fairs held each year in Acqualanga, the regional fair in February, the regional summer fair in August and the most important and prestigious, the national truffle fair held in the last two weeks of October.
Vinitours is very pleased to work closely with our friend and associate Andrea Tomassetti from Le marche to offer personalised truffle hunts in the countryside near the Adriatic resort of Senigallia, these tours cater for smaller groups who also may wish to visit the mill where Andrea produces his wonderful Montedoro range of olive oils and also the local organic wine producers.
We are also pleased to now be involved with one of the premier producers of truffles in Le Marche and based in the area of Acqualagna, and we can offer larger group tours and visits to this area. The tours in Acqualagna include taking part in tutored tastings and hunts with their truffle experts with accommodation being provided should this be required.
