Le Senate wines from Marche, Italy

Le Senate wines from the south of the Marche region of eastern Italy are produced by a new wine maker only established on the hills near the pretty village of Altidona in 2003 by Giulio Visi and his wife Pamela.
Altidona is a quiet village set in the rolling hillsides of this part of Marche, only a few kilommtres from the coast and close to the popular Adriatic resorts of Porto san Giorgio and Pedaso.
The vineyards cover just over seven hectares on fertile soil high in levels of calcium carbonate, referred to locally as calcinello, the method of viniculture used by the owners is by organic means of production though the winery is not yet officially certified as organic.
Wine producers in this area of Marche normally produce typical white wines such as Passerina, Pecorino and Falerio along with the red Rosso Piceno and Marche Rosso and most producers have been established for many years in fact many centuries in some cases.
The name of this small specialist wine maker derives from the circles which represent the tax bands which were commonly used in Marche mediaeval times, the second circle or senate being where vineyards were to be found.

I vini di La Senate sono prodotti nel sud della regione Marche, Italia, da una cantina relativamente recente, stabilitasi nelle colline circostanti Altidona (FM), nel 2003 da Giulio Visi e sua moglie Pamela.
Altidona è un tranquillo borgo sulle colline del fermano a pochi chilometri dalla costa e da Porto San Giorgio e Pedaso.
La vigna copre una superficie di poco più di sette ettari di terreno ad alto contenuto di carbonato di calcio, comunemente chiamato calcinello, e la vinificazione segue metodi biologici di produzione sebbene la cantina non sia ancora ufficialmente certificata come tale.
La produzione di questa zona normalmente è legata alle varietà autoctone nella realizzazione di vini tipici quali i bianchi Passerina, Pecorino e Falerio ed tra i rossi il Marche Rosso ed il Rosso Piceno, con una tradizione di produzione in genere di molte decadi ed talvolta secoli.
Il nome di questa cantina deriva dal sistema di tassazione in uso durante il medioevo e che si basava sulla suddivisione del terreno attorno al comune in "senate", fasce concentriche che si irradiavano dal comune. Nel logo dell'azienda è evidenziata la seconda fascia che era quella comunemente dedicata alla coltivazione di vino ed olio.

The husband and wife team at Le Senate decided not to use the grape varieties commonly used to make wine in this area of Marche, such as Montepulciano, instead they concentrated on growing several varieties of French grapes including Merlot, Cabernet franc and Cabernet Sauvingnon. It was decided that by using these varieties they could produce wines that would be unique in character and taste in this part of Italy and they could concentrate on producing very high quality wines for their customers.
At the moment Le Senate only produce two red wines, the Barbula and the Cacinello and the Barbula which was the first to come on the market only in 2012 and a reserve Barbula should be on the market very soon.

Giulio e sua moglie hanno deciso di non usare le varietà autoctone comuni della zona per la produzione del loro vino, ma hanno invece puntato sulla coltivazione di diverse varietà di uve francesi quali il Merlot, il Cabernet Franc a Cabernet Sauvignon. La scelta è stata effettuata nella volontà di creare un vino unico nel carattere e nel gusto per questa zona della Marche, concentrandosi su una piccola produzione di altissima qualità per i loro clienti.
Al momento Le Senate produce solamente due varietà di rosso, il Barbula ed il Calcinello con il Barbula uscito sul mercato per primo nel 2012 e del quale si avrà a breve disponibile anche la riserva.
