Maltese Artisan Wines

There are several large wine producers on the Islands of Malta and Gozo, including the brand leaders Marsovin and Delicata, but we are very pleased to have been introduced to small artisan wine makers by Malta Sunripe who are based in the village of Mgarr on Malta.
Wine production in Malta dates back many thousands of years, the first wine is thought to have been produced by the Phoenicians but it was not until the early 20th Century that wine was produced on a commercial scale by the Marsovin family who founded the company which today still produces much of the wine on Malta.
The wines that we at Vinitours are associated with are produced by the small farmers and growers are all made from the indigenous Maltese varieties, the Gellewza producing a fine red wine and the Girgentina a crisp white. The grapes are all hand picked in local vineyards, these are located in Bingemma, the Mgarr valley and in Tas-Santi, these areas having being used to grow vines for many centuries.
The grape varieties grown on the Islands have increased over the years since the 1970's, and the more well known Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Moscato and Trebbiano varieties are now found in many of the wines that are produced by the big wine companies.

Ci sono diversi poduttori di vino nelle isole di Malta e Gozo tra cui le più note Marsovin e Delicata, ma recentemente siamo lieti di essere stati a visitare, su indicazione di Malta Sunripe, alcuni piccoli produttori vicino Mgarr a Malta.
La produzione vinicola a Malta ha le sue origini databili a migliaia di anni fa, addirittura all'epoca Fenicia ma solamente durante il ventesimo secolo la produzione in queste isole ha assunto scala commerciale da cantine a conduzione famigliare come Marsovin che ad oggi produce la quasi totalità del vino su Malta.
I vini con cui siamo entrati in contatto durante la nostra ultima visita sono tutti prodotti da piccole azienda artigiane locali e provenienti da varietà autoctone quali Gellewza, un raffinato rosso, e Girgentina, un bianco rinfrescante. Le uve sono tutte raccolte a mano nelle cantine locali situate nelle zone di Bingemma, la valle di Mgarr e Tas-Santi, tutte zone in cui la coltivazione della vite è attiva da secoli.
Le varietà di uve presenti nell'isola sono state implementate  a partire dagli anni settanta con l'introduzione di ben note varietà quali il Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Moscato e Trebbiano che ad oggi sono tutte coltivate dalle compagnie maggiori.

Unforunately the Girgentina grape variety does not produce wines that are able to compete against the new varieties that are now grown on the Islands in terms of taste and flavour, so most wine makers are increasingly not using this indigenous Maltese variety so it is welcome that companies such as Sunripe are promoting wines made from Girgentina grapes.

Sunripe Malta are one of a few small Maltese companies that are now promoting artisan Maltese food products such as fine olive oils, jams and wines to the local population as well as making these wonderful products known outside of the Islands.

The wines of Malta are still relatively unknown in the UK and only one or two specialist shops and imports sell them, mainly in south east of England, they are also served at several restaurants in central London. The specialist Maltese deli and food shop Parparellu in Hammersmith, London now sells a small selection of Maltese wine and hopefully they will be importing small quantities of wines made from indigenous grape varieties in the near future.

Sfortunatamente varietà locali come la Girgentina non producono vini capaci di competere con le nuove varietà introdotte sull'isola tanto per gusto che per aromi  per ciò ad oggi molti produttori stanno abbandonando la coltivazione di questa varietà autoctona. E' perciò ancora più apprezzabile che compagnie come Sunripe si impengino a mantenerla viva ed a promuoverla.

Sunripe Malta è una delle poche piccole aziende produttrici presenti sull'isola e che attivamente promuove il vino e prodotti Maltesi come olio d'oliva e marmellate oltre al vino. L'attività è rivolta tanto alla popolazione locale che alla conoscienza di questi prodotti oltre i confini isolani.

I vini maltesi sono ancora relativamente sconosciuti in Inghilterra e solo un paio di negozi specializzati ne vendono, nel sud est dell'Inghilterra, ma si possono trovare in diversi ristoranti londinesi. Per esempio il Deli specializzato in prodotti maltesi Parparellu ad Hammersmith, Londra al momento vende diversi dei vini prodotti sull'isola e ci auguriamo che in futuro saranno disponibili anche vini provenieni dalle viti autoctone e non solo da quelle impiantate negli ultimi decenni. 

Marsovin wines of Malta

Marsovin have been producing their wines on the Islands of Malta and Gozo since the company was founded by the Cassar family in 1919 and was incorporated as a family run company in 1956.
At present the company has five estates totalling twenty hectares of land which is owned by Marsovin and the Cassar family, this land exclusively given over to the production of high quality wines, with another 130 hectares of land contracted to local Maltese and Gozitan farmers to produce wine for the company.
Since 1956 the company has expanded and modernised their production building a reputation for high quality  and expert wine making, and has in that time become the main producer and exporter of wines in Malta.
The ideal climatic condition on the Maltese Islands together with stringent quality controls and expert vinification processes provide an outstanding level of quality over their full range of wines.

Marsovin produce vino nelle isole di Malta e Gozo fin da quando la compagnia è stata fondata dai Cassar nel 1919 ed è stata poi successivamente inglobata nel business famigliare nel 1956.
Ad oggi la compagnia possiede cinque tenute per un totale di venti ettari di terreno posseduti da Morsovin e dalla famiglia Cassar. L'intero terreno è interamente dedicato alla produzione di vino di alta qualità, insieme ad altri 130 ettari a contratto con fattorie locali tanto di Malta che di Gozo, per la coltivazione delle uve da destinare poi alla produzione dell'azienda.
Fin dal 1956 la compagnia lavora costantemente per espandere e modernizzare la produzione, costruendo una reputazione di esperti e raffinati produttori di vino, ed ad oggi la compagnia e diventata pa principale produttrice di vino di Malta.
Le condizioni climatiche ideali di queste isole insieme con controlli di qualità severissimi ed un esperto processo di vinificazione, portano un livello eccezionale di qualità nella produzione di tutta la loro linea di vini.

Marsovin has always strived to produce some of the best wines on Malta and has recently been expanding the range of wines on offer to the public, these include popular table wines, single vineyard wines, sparkling wine and sweet wines. As early as the nineteen seventies they produced the firsr single grape variety wines and in the nineteen nineties the company planted the largest vineyard on the Islands.
The company produce two of the premium red wines made on the Islands, also the first ever Brut wine, made by the method classique, the Cassar de Malte as well as several International award winning wines and Marsovin wines are now exported all over the world, including the UK, Japan and New Zealand.
Visits to the extensive Marsovin wine cellars where there are over 100,000 bottles and hundreds of oak barrels are held throughout the year and attract many visitors from all over the world throughout the year.

Marsovin nella sua costante ricerca del meglio nella produzione vinicola, ha recentemente aumentato le tipologie di vino da offrire al pubblico, che ora comprende una linea di vini da tavola, vini monovarietali, vini frizzanti ed infine vini dolci. La prima produzione monovarietale risale all'inizio degli anni settanta mentre invece risale all'inizio degli anni novanta la la realizzazione della più grande vigna dell'isola.
La compagnia produce due dei vini rossi premium dell'isola nonchè il primo spumante Brut ottenuto con metodo classico, e la famiglia Cassar ad oggi annovera molti riconoscimenti in campo internazionale per la sua produzione quasi secolare che grazie a Marsovin è ora esportata in tutto il mondo, incluso Regno Unito, Giappone e Nuova Zelanda..
Visite alle cantine, dove riposano ogni anno più di 100,000 bottiglie e centinaia di botti in quercia, sono possibili durante tutto l'anno ed attraggono numerosi visitatori dalle più diverse parti del mondo.

As part of the companies successful promotional and advertising strategy Marsovin hold a popular and now famous wine festival on the Islands each July, which is normally held in the Hastings gardens in Valletta which overlook the yacht marina and provide a beautiful backdrop for the event.
This special summer event is very popular both with locals and with the large number of foreign tourists present on the Islands in the summer and it is increasing in size and popularity each year.
There are over thirty wines showcased at the festival and to compliment the wines there is a wide range of typical Mediterranean dishes prepared by respected local chefs. Music is provided by local bands and musicians and it has become one of the must attend events in the Maltese summer calendar.

Come parte della strategia di promozione e pubblicità della compagnia, ogni anno Marsovin tiene a Malta quello che è oggi il più famoso festival del vino dell'Isola in Luglio, ospitato normalmente nei giardini Hastings a Valletta che offrono una meravigliosa vista panoramica del porto turistico fornendo una perfetta cornice all'evento.
Il festival è molto popolare sia tra i locali che non, richiamando molti turisti spesso già presenti nell'isola che rimane una nota, e costantemente sempre più popolare, meta turistica.
In esposizione si possono provare più di trenta diversi vini che vengono accompagnati da una vasta selezione di piatti tipici mediterranei preparati dai conosciuti chefs locali. Musica ed intrattenimento completano la cornice per un evento che è oramai un "must" della stagione estiva Maltese
